A Big Update

8 min read
Well I guess I have a lot to write about here. It's been a while.

Only read past this line if you give any number of fucks about me and my life ^_^

So a lot of things have changed.
I went to uni.
I met some phenomenal people on Google+.
I left uni.
I went to America (Washington DC and San Francisco).
I went to Greece.
I got a job.
I got a (kind of) boyfriend.
I left my job.
I'm now (kind of) job hunting.

And I think I should get back into artistic stuff.
I really enjoy drawing, painting, writing, designing, musicking (definitely a word).

And if I try really hard, maybe I can make money from it. Probably (almost certainly) not enough to live off, but I should still give it a go. My creativity has spiralled down into a terrible state of disrepair, and I don't like it.
Also somebody just gave me a 3 month Premium Membership, so I definitely need to take advantage of that - thanks Mr. Anon!

Uni
I went to university in London a year ago for a Forensic Computing course.
The course looked great. Everything about it seemed to be what I was interested in. But once I started, it was just wrong. I felt out of place, bored, etc etc. I only lasted a few weeks before I decided it was time to leave, although I stuck around for 5 months.

Google+
I joined Google+ in the first few days of the invite-only beta launched. After I gave up attending lectures and doing any work at uni, I got more into the night-world of the internet - or more accurately, the day-world of America.

Google+ has a video conferencing feature called Hangouts which allows you to talk to up to 9 other people at once. The way it works means that it is very easy to get to know new people in a very intimate way.

America
Long story short, I left uni and went to the USA to stay with a guy in DC for a few weeks. The first week was his birthday, so people from Google+ from all over America came to celebrate with him. I met about 40 people from Google+ during that week, and they are now some of my best friends.

After three weeks, a couple of people in San Francisco put up a post about flying me to see them - they didn't know when I'd next be in the US, but they wanted to see me so they bought me a plane ticket! I stayed out in SF for eight days, got incredibly drunk and high, and generally had a great time.

There is plenty more to write about my trip to the US, but I could never fit it all in here and actually expect anyone to read it. I'd be surprised if you even read this far!

Now I've visited America, I know I could probably never live there, but I am definitely intending to return for holiday and visiting people.

Greece
After returning from America, I was straight off to Greece with my family. True, it was a family holiday, so wasn't nearly as, ahem, exciting as it could have been, but it was amazing nonetheless. We used to go to Europe at least once a year when I was a child: we'd visit my parents' friends in Antwerp, Brussels and The Ardenne (all places in Belgium). But apart from those visits, I'd never been anywhere other than north Europe, and I'd never been to a hot country. (DC and SF are, of course, pretty damn hot - all three are at approximately the same latitude.)

We spent two weeks out in Greece, slightly south of Kalamata in the Peloponnese. I never wore more than a tshirt, shorts and flip-flops, which for me is totally unheard of. There was a pool, a beach, several little bays to swim and snorkel in (I've never been snorkelling before but it's amazing!), and lots of cute restaurants around the bay. Whilst there were lots of tourist-y people on holiday there, it is one of the quieter and more secluded regions of tourist-Greece. It never felt like we were in a holiday camp, we were free to do what we wanted and go where we pleased.

I'm not one for touristing around, and neither are my family, but the place we were staying at runs short excursions around the area for holiday-makers like us. They're only run for one or two weeks a year, so the environment and villages have remained untouched by the rest of the world. We took two of these such tours. I can't quite remember them properly, but we got to see real olive presses, eat proper olive oil (not that Extra Virgin I've-actually-been-pressed-more-than-F5 olive oil crap), see real Greek villagers up in the mountains, etc etc. It was awesome.

Job
Through an odd series of events, I accidentally landed a pretty decent job in web development. I was working for/with one guy, who had been running his business independently for 2 years, after having worked at IBM and similar places. He hired me, but knew it was a risk as I wasn't qualified. However, he liked me at the interview, and saw potential for training me up to the required standard.

This lasted several months, and I learned a damn lot. We got on really well and it was a really nice working environment. I'm pretty unlikely to find anything similar unless I work for myself.

Unfortunately the plan didn't work out, as I wasn't used to being in a proper working environment. He had to work enough to bring money in, I had to work to bring more money in, but at the same time we had to find time to train me up so I could do that work. I left during the probation period, which was obviously the idea if it didn't work. We didn't part on awkward terms, and he regretted letting me go, but c'est la vie or something. I don't know French but someone I've been talking to lately keeps saying it.

Boyfriend
I don't know if we're yet at the 'boyfriend' stage of relationship, but a) I'd like to think so, b) I think he'd like to think so too, and c) referring to him as 'my boyfriend' makes it an awful lot simpler to say than 'my nearly almost possible boyfriend although I'm not quite sure what's going on yet'.

Obviously I met him online (doesn't everyone these days?), but as luck would have it he only (only, ha) lives 100 miles away. That actually equates to £19 and 3 hours on the train, which isn't too bad. Due to awkward circumstances, we've so far only been able to meet up once. But once we met IRL, I knew he was right.

Whilst we had kinda planned the meeting, due to a breakdown in communication he didn't actually realise I was coming to see him. I waited at his platform, terrified of the first actual meeting... only to ambush him and discover he wasn't expecting me at all! He almost died of shock, but got over it pretty quickly. We sat around chatting for a bit, and then I took him on the London Underground for the first time and took him on the cable car that goes over the Thames river. It was pretty cool and rather cute, but the weather was fucking shit (surprise) so the cable car wasn't nearly as exciting as it could have been.

He then took me to the Ubuntu Phone launch event where we met several of the lead Ubuntu developers, and Mark Shuttleworth himself. We got to actually touch and play with the first Ubuntu phones... they're obviously still in development, but they're pretty damn cool. As soon as I get a job and some semblance of income, I'll be buying a Nexus so I can play with it.

I have no idea who is reading this, but some of you have probably come across him before. He's known as Joey, d0od and Mr. OMG! Ubuntu!. And I am lucky as fuck to have him. God knows why he has time for me, but I'm not complaining.

Job Hunting
So now... I'm on the hunt for a new job. To be honest it can (and probably will) be absolutely anything. I have no idea what I want to do, but I'm slowly depleting my last pay-cheque. As long as I can get some money in, then I can start to explore what I'd like to do with the near future of my life.

Future
I don't even fucking know.

It just has to include these things:
  • Joey
  • America
  • Canada
  • Europe
  • Australia (considering a working holiday)
  • Travelling to other exciting places
  • ...

That is all for now.

Thank you for reading this far (you weirdo)

I don't really have anything to write here
But the other journal was old and irrelevant and had a crappy theme

In a couple of weeks, I'm visiting America!

I'll be there for about 3 months, and in that time I will be travelling around, meeting and staying with loads of people I've met from Google+.

I'm starting in DC, popping up to NY for a couple of days, then moving on down through Texas state over to California.

I'm hoping to move out to California, so over the next few months I will be looking for a job or a school out there.

I'm so excited:D

Okay so..

This is the weirdest journal ever.

Basically, I've ended up in this random Alba model competition which I do not remember entering...

If I win, I'll get a "Modelling experience" worth £100 and get introduced to all ALBA's A-List agencies!

BUT FIRST -- I need to get the most Likes on my photo on their facebook page.

So please please please go vote for me!

(Obviously only if you like the picture.. I personally don't like this one, there's much better ones they could have chosen but oh well.)

Thanks! ♥

N.B. about the theme... I made it years ago, but it's still just as hot so thought I'd use it for this journal. It has nothing to do with it at all. :D
